4-H in the United States is a youth organization administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), with the mission of "engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development." The name represents four personal development areas of focus for the organization: head, heart, hands, and health. The organization has over 6.5 million members in the United States, from ages five to nineteen, in approximately 90,000 clubs. Clubs and related organizations now exist in many other countries as well; the organization and administration varies from country to country. The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, and life skills of youth through mostly experiential learning programs. Though typically thought of as an agriculturally focused organization as a result of its history, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering, and technology programs. Today, 4-H and related programs exist in over 80 countries around the world. Each of these programs operates independently, but cooperatively through international exchanges, global education programs, and communications. I am in a horse club in 4-H and not many people know about the food project so what kinds of things can I make to take to the fair? I know that they can't be refrigerated but not really anything else so yeah. Q. i cant decide on what kind of project to do for ffa and 4-h. i want to either grow or raising something. . . like poultry- nothing to big. also, something that is going to be marketable/profitable. nothing to unusual. i have looked at sugar beets, wheat, chickens, guinea hens, turkeys, sweet corn, rutabagas, potatoes. where am i going to sell this item? i live in a fairly small town. 10,000 people more or less. has to be something that will grow in mn either underground or in the cold/winter. possibly something that can be planted in the spring...ya you can add that too. just need alot of ideas. In our county, chickens have had the largest profit margin, provided you have an animal auction at the end of your co fair (tell your politians to bid at the auction). Another big $ maker has been sweet corn, yeah you have to harvest it EARLY in the morning (sometimes before sunrise), that's usually when the sugars are the highest and it lasts longer, sweeter, and customers LOVE great sweet corn!! You could set up a stand and sell corn- excellent experience in planting, marketing, and customer relations with your community. A few locals here started with an acre now are growing 10 acres due to demand! Good Luck!!
