How can I get health papers on ducks we hatch to be used for 4-H projects?
Q. My stepmom is trying to raise ducks to help my daughter with her 4-H projects. But they need to have health papers. How do we get these. If anyone can help me that would be great! We live in Ohio if that makes any difference.

A. The vet does not have to be a specialist or an avian vet. A regular vet is perfectly capable of treating birds. Trust me, I know for sure. He just has to be willing to do it, some do not like to treat birds or poultry. If one turns you down, call another one. You will need the vet to check out the ducks, and he will fill out a health certificate for you. Please read my profile.

Q. Hi, Yes i am indeed wanting to show a chicken or turkey at my 4-H show this year but the only problem is i do not live on a farm and i live in a neighborhood. Would i be better off owning a few ducks in my backyard? Because i Do have a fairly nice sized pond?? please help me. Ki8900 you have been very usefull and i would like to thank you.

A. I would try to first check out the city zoning laws. You would be surprised but many cities are fine with owning a few hens. Roosters are, however, often not an option. I would recommend a few hens instead of ducks, they are incredibly messy! If you want help raising urban chickens there is lots available. = a great urban hen coop = backyard poultry magazine and are both city chicken websites. I was a 4-H poultry leader for years - you will love it!

How to Raise Champion Turkeys for 4-H or Pleasure?
Q. I want to start raising Turkeys for pleasure. My friend is going to join the 4-H and I told her she can use my turkeys to show if she doesn't sell them to slaughter. I think it would be fun to have Turkeys. We've decided on Bronze Turkeys. The chicks at the feed store are really expensive, so I need to know how to do this the right way.
Asked by Elizabeth T - Mon Jul 21 05:48:58 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you have a turkey you should keep the turkey in some type of turkey or chicken coop. Here you can place bedding inside of a small shed or barn to keep the turkeys warm from the winter months. You can also place some heat lamps inside of the shed or barn to keep them extra warm. The bedding will also help to keep them from freezing to death during the colder months. You can give them different types of bird seed and other things to keep them healthy, active and happy. You should also give them plenty of fresh water on a daily basis. Unfortunately, they can't be housetrained, but can be taught to come when they're called. Turkeys can get somewhat large; about the size of a large dog. They are not known for biting, only when they feel… [cont.]

How much are the black steer you show at 4-H fairgrounds??
Q. I would really like to show a steer at the 4-H grounds. But don't know how much they are..Could you please help me?!?

A. Ok first of all you just don't go buy a steer and take it off to fairgrounds to show it, you start from the beginning. You need to go and buy a Angus steer calf which will run you between $350.00 and $1,000.00 in US dollars. calf needs to be seen by vet. this calf will only be a couple of months old. for the next 9 months or so you will spend every waking minute with this calf training it to show at fair time. which means getting up at about 4 am to feed and brush and curry calf, and after all of that you need to clean stall. over time calf will grow fro about 300 pounds to way over 2000 pounds when it is time to go to fair you will be judged against all other in area and our proudest moment will be when some restaurant in area buys your… [cont.]

4-H - Any ideas for youth service projects?
Q. I've recently taken over a 4-H club and would like to incorporate more community type service. We have made valentines for Veterans, and collected canned food for the food bank. Any other out of the box ideas? Thanks! Sorry, I posted twice under different title.

A. Finally, a question that is right up my alley! First have the kids brainstorm. They must have a buy in for the activity to be meaningful. Where do they see needs? Spead a newspaper on the floor and have the kids stand around looking at it to get ideas of things which need to be done. Have them write to local organizations ( a template letter is fine) and explain your group and ages, ask if they have any projects coming up in the next 2 years which could use their services. Once your club has selected the projects it wants to work on , forward the other responses to your County club or office so other clubs can get involved to. Also, we look at the pledge and try to do at least one service project in each area: club, community,… [cont.]

A. Your 4-H Swine leaders should be helping you do so. There is junior and senior leaders as well as the adult who is in charge of that department You should call them up and make arrangments to met up to go through the process. At the same time when going to next 4-H meeting, when they ask if any new business, ask if there can be a notian to have a clinic for newly and continuing 4-H'ers to go over record books. I have 2 sets of record books extremly thick since I was in 4-H for 9 years. I showed horses though. But I was a member of other things we did like arts, cooking and all that too. It does get confusing and all. But once you get started, you pretty much get the hang of it. I only know the horse part on filling it out and all that. [cont.]

A. I would definitely do good bit about their history. Here are a few links that should help. One tells about where they are in the wild, the other tells how we came to have chinchillas in the US today. Wikipedia isn't normally my first choice for information, but this article is pretty accurate. Here is an excellent link to M.F. Chapman's story on how chinchillas came to be in the US: I would also include a color wheel, or maybe pictures of the different colors of chinchillas. If you go to post what you are doing a project for, and ask for pictures - I'm sure you'll have them in every color, shape, and size for your presentation. I would definitely mention what a proper diet is, but please be sure that you are correct in… [cont.]

A. There is no difference, pony club is just that where you have pony registered same as you do with dogs and cats register them with dog and cat clubs. 4H is a county or state club you join to show your pony go to 4h.com and read up on it. You don't have to join either if you don't want to.

I have to do a Horse 4-H demonstration & don't have lots of time. Ideas, anybody?
Q. I'm in the local Horse 4-H club, and I have to do a demonstraion to the 4-H Extension Office on Tuesday (5 days away). I'm in the [individual] Seinor Class, so my presentation has to be 10-20 minutes long; 15 is perfect. I CAN bring real horses and do the demonstration outside in the parking lot, but I'd rather do something that I can demonstrate inside a building. Does anybody have any ideas?

A. Do a demonstration on cleaning tack XD. How to wash blankets, bits, etc, etc etc. It's easy and effective. It'll get the point acrost and you can ramble about it as long as you want The Proper Care and Maintanace of Tack. Print out some pictures of tack getting older, etc how to clean it, etc, give demonstration on how to clean it, etc... That's what I'd try (i'm used to doing 4-h projects in 2 days >.> on the fly... or the night before achievement days lol) Anyway, definately just work on how to tell what tack is broken, dirty, how often to clean, what chemicals work, do an overall evaluation of chemicals, how to clean blankets, etc, how to replace any old leather, etc, name of leather care people, etc and why it is safe and… [cont.]

How do you show a rabbit in 4-h ?
Q. This is my first year in my county 4-H and i just wanted to know a little bit more information on everything i should know, and what to expect.
Asked by cheerchick - Sun Jan 11 13:51:33 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The best thing to do to learn how to show a rabbit for 4H is to find someone in your county that has already done it. Is there someone in your 4H group that can mentor you? Ask your adult advisor to hook you up with someone who has more rabbit experience. it is hard to tell you what you will need to know as each county does their rabbit show differently. If you can't get help in your club then contact your 4H extension agent and have them help you find someone. You can go to the ARBA website and request a copy of the showmanship list that ARBA follows. I have been an advisor for 10 years, I hope you will be able to find someone to help you and that you can practice with. If not please email me privately and I will try and help.

Does a dairy goat have to be registered to show in 4-H?
Q. I am in 4-H and just started dairy goats. I plan on showing next year at the county fair. I would like to show LaManchas. How old should a doe be for show? How should she be clipped? Do they need papers? Any videos pics or tips will help. Thanks

A. Papers aren't necesary. Does can be on bottles, as long as they are trained to walk so they can be shown. Clipped evenly. Ask your 4H leader for names of other, more experienced showers.
