How can I get health papers on ducks we hatch to be used for 4-H projects?
Q. My stepmom is trying to raise ducks to help my daughter with her 4-H projects. But they need to have health papers. How do we get these. If anyone can help me that would be great! We live in Ohio if that makes any difference.

A. The vet does not have to be a specialist or an avian vet. A regular vet is perfectly capable of treating birds. Trust me, I know for sure. He just has to be willing to do it, some do not like to treat birds or poultry. If one turns you down, call another one. You will need the vet to check out the ducks, and he will fill out a health certificate for you. Please read my profile.

A. If you have some meaningful involvement in your club (hold offices, win awards, etc.), then it will look fine.

How to Raise Champion Turkeys for 4-H or Pleasure?
Q. I want to start raising Turkeys for pleasure. My friend is going to join the 4-H and I told her she can use my turkeys to show if she doesn't sell them to slaughter. I think it would be fun to have Turkeys. We've decided on Bronze Turkeys. The chicks at the feed store are really expensive, so I need to know how to do this the right way.
Asked by Elizabeth T - Mon Jul 21 05:48:58 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you have a turkey you should keep the turkey in some type of turkey or chicken coop. Here you can place bedding inside of a small shed or barn to keep the turkeys warm from the winter months. You can also place some heat lamps inside of the shed or barn to keep them extra warm. The bedding will also help to keep them from freezing to death during the colder months. You can give them different types of bird seed and other things to keep them healthy, active and happy. You should also give them plenty of fresh water on a daily basis. Unfortunately, they can't be housetrained, but can be taught to come when they're called. Turkeys can get somewhat large; about the size of a large dog. They are not known for biting, only when they feel… [cont.]

A. Your 4-H Swine leaders should be helping you do so. There is junior and senior leaders as well as the adult who is in charge of that department You should call them up and make arrangments to met up to go through the process. At the same time when going to next 4-H meeting, when they ask if any new business, ask if there can be a notian to have a clinic for newly and continuing 4-H'ers to go over record books. I have 2 sets of record books extremly thick since I was in 4-H for 9 years. I showed horses though. But I was a member of other things we did like arts, cooking and all that too. It does get confusing and all. But once you get started, you pretty much get the hang of it. I only know the horse part on filling it out and all that. [cont.]

A. The focus of 4-H is "To Make The Best Better". In a horse oriented 4-H group, you learn horse management, horsemanship skills, and horse science. In horse 4-H groups there are usually unmounted meetings and mounted meetings. The meetings vary(crafts, lessons, trail rides, Christmas parties, etc.) usually always are they fun filled and a learning experience. 4-H is also a great way to meet knowledgeable horse people and friends that could help you throughout your horse life. To sum it up, 4-H is something that you should take advantage of.

What are you favorite pony club or 4-H activities?
Q. Hi, our club just got a new DC so I'm helping to brainstorm ideas for us to do. What have been some of your favorite activities that you've done with your pony club of 4-H group that are fun and educational, like for unmounted or mounted clinics? Thanks

A. For unmounted, we've had a great hands on anatomy lesson at a local college's facility. Lots of bones, cross sections, and even a few organs to be looked at, felt, etc. We've also had guest speakers from places such as the master of a local fox hunt, a farrier and a hay farmer. For part of quiz practices, we have pony club members teach subjects to the other kids. Even the little kids can come up with a presentation on a simple topic (like horse colors or markings, or what's in a grooming kit). Anything else that the kids can practice themselves is good, such as bandaging, longeing, etc. For mounted we have regular lessons, cross country practices, games practices, and a couple of trail rides per year. A. First, make sure of the rules in your district/state. Where I am, 4-Hers must own or lease the horse they use (or it must be owned by an immediate family member). Registration or grade papers must be provided as proof of that status. You aren't allowed to borrow a horse or ride a school horse. When I was doing it (I aged out several years back), leasing wasn't even allowed--the horse had to be owned by the 4-H member or an immediate family member, and it had to have been owned by that person since at least May 1st (the shows were in June/July). If you have no access to a horse right now and aren't sure where to find one, chances are you need to start by taking lessons on school horses. Find a barn and sign up for lessons. Q. i cant decide on what kind of project to do for ffa and 4-h. i want to either grow or raising something. . . like poultry- nothing to big. also, something that is going to be marketable/profitable. nothing to unusual. i have looked at sugar beets, wheat, chickens, guinea hens, turkeys, sweet corn, rutabagas, potatoes. where am i going to sell this item? i live in a fairly small town. 10,000 people more or less. has to be something that will grow in mn either underground or in the cold/winter. possibly something that can be planted in the spring...ya you can add that too. just need alot of ideas.

A. You included some details but not sure how much area you have to work with. In our county, chickens have had the largest profit margin, provided you have an animal auction at the end of your co fair (tell your politians to bid at the auction). Another big $ maker has been sweet corn, yeah you have to harvest it EARLY in the morning (sometimes before sunrise), that's usually when the sugars are the highest and it lasts longer, sweeter, and customers LOVE great sweet corn!! You could set up a stand and sell corn- excellent experience in planting, marketing, and customer relations with your community. A few locals here started with an acre now are growing 10 acres due to demand! Good Luck!!

Were both 17 and seniors in high school and I know the age limit for 4-H is 18... so do we even have enough time? Second of all, do we have to get the pigs and cows as baby's? Are there certain breeds that are and aren't allowed? It would be awesome if there was someone that could just message me and inform me about all of this. Thanks =]

A. I've been in 4-H for the past 9 years (I'm 17 now) & I've raised a pig in 4-H for 6 years. You normally get piglets around April & the fair on our county is in late July, early August. When raising an animal for 4-H, help from parents is very limited because you're supposed to do most of it yourself. I've always had a blast doing it & I find it very easy.

Q. I am new to the whole 4-h thing and my friend and I decided we wanted to raise and show swine and cattle.

A. If you were never a part of 4H and you are applying for a 4H scholarship, you will not get the scholarship.

What's the best animal to take to take to the fair in your first year of 4-H?
Q. I am looking to join a 4-H club this year. I'm in Ohio. Last year I signed up for 4-H, but I couldn't get the animal I signed up for originally and I has to drop out. Can you please recommend some easy-to-take-care-of, calm, and small animals I can take to the county fair? Thanks a bunch! (BTW: I have a 2-acre yard)

A. Guinea pigs and rabbits are fun (I have both) I also do goats and chickens 4-H. Goats are small animals and so are chickens. You have to live in a rural, country area, though. It is illegal to have them in the city. Remember, Are you getting them just so you can do 4-H? Or are you going to be commited to taking care of them always?
