Child development refers to the biological and psychological changes that occur in human beings between birth and the end of adolescence, as the individual progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy. Because these developmental changes may be strongly influenced by genetic factors and events during prenatal life, genetics and prenatal development are usually included as part of the study of child development. Related terms include "developmental psychology", referring to development throughout the lifespan and "pediatrics", the branch of medicine relating to the care of children. Developmental change may occur as a result of genetically-controlled processes known as maturation, or as a result of environmental factors and learning, but most commonly involves an interaction between the two.

There are various definitions of periods in child development, since each period is a continuum with individual differences regarding start and ending.

Approximate outline of development periods in child development.

Some age-related development periods and examples of defined intervals are: newborn (ages 0–1 month); infant (ages 1 month – 1 year); toddler (ages 1–3 years); preschooler (ages 4–6years); school-aged child (ages 6–13 years); adolescent (ages 13–20). However, organizations like Zero to Three and the World Association for Infant Mental Health use the term infant as a broad category, including children from birth to age 3, a logical decision considering that the Latin derivation of the word infant refers to those who have no speech.

The optimal development of children is considered vital to society and so it is important to understand the social, cognitive, emotional, and educational development of children. Increased research and interest in this field has resulted in new theories and strategies, with specific regard to practice that promotes development within the school system. In addition there are also some theories that seek to describe a sequence of states that comprise child development.

What can I do with education in Child Development but I want to work with animals?
Q. I am almost finished with my BA in Child Development and I know I want to work with kids, yet I don't want to be a teacher. I do love animals and I would be so happy working and helping animals. What kinds of jobs are out there where I can work with both? What kind of education do I need? I am willing to go to graduate school, but what do I get it in?

A. If you want to work with animals, you can become a veterinary technician pretty easily. You will need to be certified in some places, so depends on your location. Also, if you are already completing you BA in Child Development, you might want to see if there are pet therapy programs at hospitals in the pediatric wards. This combines all your experience and your interests. You can continue to work with kids and see if you can involve animals (registered therapy pets) in their care and rehabilitation.

How do I get a Child Development permit in CA?
Q. I just graduated with a BA in Child & Adolescent Studies, and on many job listings the requirements state that I need a Child Development permit.

A. Most cities have a consortium and you can apply there for a permit. You can also ask at the local school district you would like to apply to and they can at least lead you to the right direction. Hopefully this is helpful!

Whats the difference between Early childhood education (ECE) and Child development (CD) programs?
Q. I'd like to go back to school to get a degree to teach pre-school. Colleges have classes listed as early childhood education classes and some colleges have classes labeled child development classes. Are these interchangeable and mean the same thing? Is ECE what I want? I will go in and talk to counselors, but just thought maybe someone out there could know. Thanks.

A. The ECE program would have a broader emphasis. It would include some child development courses but also would include psychology, curriculum, and student teaching. You could earn a bachelor's degree in either one at some colleges. A tech college or junior college would give you an Associates degree (a 2-year degree) and that would be enough for almost any preschool that is not part of a public school.
