Ecological Systems Theory, also called Development in Context or Human Ecology theory, specifies four types of nested environmental systems, with bi-directional influences within and between the systems.

What Do You Think Of A Federation of Extremist Republics?
Q. This question is based on the theory that there is no one system that works best for everybody, and that even people with extreme views should have a country to call home. One state or province is to be turned into a long-term home for people who the current system does not suit. There are to be 5-20 communities in this federation - each with a govt that is more powerful than the federal govt. Here are some examles of the types of places I am thinking of: Quranic, Christian, etc. (the church owns/controls the govt); Socialist (the trade union congress is the govt; all companies are cooperatives/state-owned, richest earn no more than twice what poorest earn); ultragreen/ecological; tribal (run by a council of elders); a femdom state; a… [cont.]

How plausible is the Gaia Hypothesis?
Q. "The Gaia hypothesis is an ecological hypothesis proposing that the biosphere and the physical components of the Earth (atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere) are closely integrated to form a complex interacting system that maintains the climatic and biogeochemical conditions on Earth in a preferred homeostasis" - I'm interested in what you folks think. It would require natural selection on an enormously macro level that, to my knowledge, is unprecedented. The biggest objectors to it come from the field of biology. However, proponents of GH state that GH is based upon interaction from a number of different fields and that biologists have a very narrow view of things. I'm done some of my own research into this and found… [cont.]

A. The Earth sure is a complex interacting system, with a lot of feedbacks. Instead of endorsing the Gaia Hypothesis, I prefer the following argument. What would one require of the conditions of a planet to end up with one where life developed, survived over two billion years and invented intelligence? Obviously one of the most important conditions would be... stability. We wouldn t be here, if the oxygen level or the temperature fluctuates too wildly and if there weren t a lot of loops in the system that keep things fairly stable over the ages.
