Q. This is my first pregnancy and had my first prenatal visit with my family practitioner. I had alot of blood tests done but still in the dark on whether I should keep shopping around for the right doctor to guide me through my pregnancy. Is an ob/gyn recommended over a family practitioner?

A. A family practitioner is trained for all aspects of family practice. Hence, they can see a person from birth to death. It's really your opinion that matters. If you feel confident in your doctor's abilities then stay. They're trained for OB/GYN so feel assured that he's qualified. Another scenario (like what happens in mine) is this: The family practitioner sees you for your initial visit and then you're referred to the OB in the clinic. That's how it worked for me since my FP dr was so overwhelmed in patients. Good luck to you and congrats!!
