A child (plural: children) is a human being between the stages of birth and puberty. The legal definition of "child" generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority. "Child" may also describe a relationship with a parent or authority figure, or signify group membership in a clan, tribe, or religion; it can also signify being strongly affected by a specific time, place, or circumstance, as in "a child of nature" or "a child of the Sixties."

Definitions

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child defines a child as "every human being below the age of 16 years unless under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier." Biologically, a child is anyone in the developmental stage of childhood, between infancy and adulthood.

Attitudes toward children

Social attitudes toward children differ around the world in various cultures. These attitudes have changed over time and in different historical periods. A 1988 study on European attitudes toward the centrality of children found Italy was more child-centric and the Netherlands less child-centric, with other countries (Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, and West Germany) falling in between.

Does christian children fund try to convert the children and their families?
Q. I have been thinking of sponsering a child for a while. I am wondering if Christian Children's fund tries to covert. If so, what other sponsership programs are there that DO NOt try to convert, and are trustworthy and safe to donate through?

A. I have been a sponsor with CCF for 20 years and they DO NOT try and convert. Those who said that they do simply do not know what they are talking about. I would not give CCF money if they were evangelizing. CCF was originally formed by Christian missionaries in 1938 and that is where the name originates. However, they are now a private nonsectarian organization. Christian Children's Fund provides help to children regardless of race, religion, or gender. They respect the cultural heritage, personal pride and dignity of the families that they assist. Another great organization that allows you to sponsors kids is Save the Children, which works both in the U.S. and internationally -

How can I find places that are offering children to adopt for Christmas?
Q. I live in Florida and am interested in "adopting" needy children (giving them new clothing, toys, etc.) for Christmas. I know the Salvation Army is offering an Adopt a Child for Christmas program at our local mall, but I've adopted six children from this program this year and would like to perhaps find other programs/children that are in need of something for Christmas. Does anyone know of any websites I could check out that would point me in the right direction as to how to locate programs that are offering adults the ability to "adopt" a child for Christmas?

A. Check with local battered womens shelters and if you have Hospice in your area check with them. Hospice is an organization that provides care to the terminally ill and grief care to the familys of ill patients, you might be able to help out children who have recently lost a parent or someone close during the holidays. also look into adopting an senior citizen. thats what I did last year and got her some slippers and a phonecard to call her family cuz she couldnt afford to. I also must say kudos to you for making such a wonderful difference! :) oh and I forgot to meantion that I found the senior citizen adoption at a local department store on a christmas tree display where you would buy the present at the store and give it to the store… [cont.]

How have children been viewed in the past?
Q. Today it seems to me that children have many rights and are viewed as human beings that need to be treated with respect and dignity. How were children viewed in the past? Property? Slaves?

A. In the past, children were to be seen and not heard. They were to respect their elders and instead of carrying on, they were supposed to be quiet and learn from their elders.

  • Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea...Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
  • You can't raise a child in a vacuum. All that carpet dust will clog up the kid's lungs.
