A. It is the job of the police to enforce the law, if they fail to do so after repeated requests then they are corrupt , so then you could hire a lawyer , perhaps if you have no cash and your case is good a lawyer may take the case pro bono (no charge) ,another option is to tell your story to a newspaper and have them publish the details.

Are appellate cases heard before a state supreme court open to the public?
Q. Arkansas Supreme Court heard appellate case at the library on the campus of Univ. Ark. @ Hope, Ark. and was open to the public. The case involves an individual who was tried and convicted of 2 cases of capital murder, resulting in receiving 2 death sentences by lethal injection. The crime was commited in 2004. As I am the relative of one of the victims murdered, I was appalled to have read of this situation in the local newspaper. Perhaps, I am just ignorant of the legal system, but I would have thought that the Victim's family members would have been notified by someone! Is there anyone I can contact regarding this lack of empathy for our family?

A. Generally speaking, cases before State Supreme Courts are open to the public. The public has a right to know what's going on in courtrooms. Some State Supreme Courts, like New Jersey, even webcast all proceedings, including in capital cases. That said, there are exceptions -- for example, when there is a minor involved, or a rape victim, or some other reason to shield the identity of participants. Courts are pretty much run by themselves. Try calling the administrative office of the courts, or writing to the Chief Justice, if you want to lodge a complaint or suggest a different procedure.

Does anyone know of any cases in which the plaintiff did not receive equal justice?
Q. I am writing an essay on the Equal Justice Act and I want to focus on cases in which big companies force individuals to settle their cases and they do because they lack the proper representation because they cannot afford it. Does anyone know of any specific cases?

A. I was once a juror on a civil case where a 'head hunter' sued a company for non-payment. There were enough weevils on that jury that believed the white American businessman had overcharged the immigrant company owner too much for the agreed upon services and whittled down the payment owed by 2/3.
