Child abuse is the physical or psychological/emotional mistreatment of children. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define child maltreatment as any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child. Most child abuse occurs in a child's home, with a smaller amount occurring in the organizations, schools or communities the child interacts with. There are four major categories of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. Different jurisdictions have developed their own definitions of what constitutes child abuse for the purposes of removing a child from his/her family and/or prosecuting a criminal charge. According to the Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect, child abuse is "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm". TypesChild abuse can take several forms: The four main types are physical, sexual, psychological, and neglect. NeglectMain article: NeglectNeglect is where the responsible adult fails to provide adequately for various needs, including physical (failure to provide adequate food, clothing, or hygiene), emotional (failure to provide nurturing or affection), educational (failure to enroll a child in school), or medical (failure to medicate the child or take him or her to the doctor). When child abuse occurs, should the child or the perpetrator be removed from the home? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach? Asked by Twizz2004 - Wed Dec 6 20:32:10 2006 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments A. There is no simple or easy answer. It depends upon whether the child can be kept safe at home, and what the laws of that particular jurisdiction say. It also depends on the particular circumstances. Each case should be looked at individually. I am aware of many children who have been more abused after removal from their home than they were when at home. Foster care is not always the best solution. Sometimes it is quite possible to work with the family and keep everyone in the home and keep the child safe. I am also aware of cases where the child appeared to everyone to be quite safe at home, but the child died at the hands of a parent. Q. Is making children believe in God a form of child abuse and is all religion just a form of culturally acceptable delusion? Asked by xs - Thu Oct 1 13:16:12 2009 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, forcing children to believe in fairy tales and threatening them with eternal punishment in "hell" is abuse in all its forms. And yes, all organized religions are delusions.
