Grand-Parents' Visitation Rights?
Q. We live in FL - my fiance (soon-to-be) husband was adopted (his parents now divorced, as are mine) we don't allow MIL around my son. Drinker, bi-polar, manipulative, controlling woman (who has caused alot of issues between fiance & me / and us taking our son to see my family in MA) we've asked her to stop, seek help or change her attitude/behavior - to have her "sacred bond" she demands she should GET since she is the ("only" - in her eyes) grandmother. I feel that granparenting is a privledge not a right. Here is my question(s): She DEMANDS visitation, threats to take us to court - does she have rights since she is not a "blood grandparent"? Both of us don't want her around him, yet she is taking ME to court!? Husbands dad agreed to… [cont.]

A. having experienced a similar parent as a grandparent, i can empathise. the child and the grandmother should be allowed to see each other as long as it is not upsetting/disturbing for child. supervised visits are the best compromise in order to try and avoid court. as a judge may well rule that she is family and it is better for a child to deal with even difficult family members rather than be prevented from contact. i say this as an aggressive partner to a friend was allowed to have the child every weekend despite hitting his partner in front of child. so it may be a case of trying supervised visits first. and if that doesnt work, and it goes to court, at least you can demonstrate that you have tried to be reasonable. because however… [cont.]

If a minor does not need parental consent for an abortion, can they be required to inform parents?
Q. I'm thinking specifically of situation in Ballard High School in Seattle, WA, where the school's on-site health clinic sent a 15-year-old, via taxi, to get an abortion at a nearby reproductive health clinic. Washington State Law allows any girl to procure an abortion without parental consent. Among my concerns are that a minor, under supervision of the school, was sent off-site for medical treatment without notifying the parents. It seems like there should be school policy about informing parents when their child is taken elsewhere for medical treatment. Does the law obviating parental consent also supercede the parents' right to be informed of their daughter's medical treatment? Aside from the abortion aspect, which I am against but… [cont.]

A. The school might get in trouble for letting the student leave campus without parental consent (unless the parent agreed ahead of time) only because the health clinic inside the school wasn't the same clinic that performed the abortion. The abortion clinic is under no legal obligation to inform the parents or obtain parental permission for the abortion. In general, though, abortion is the exception to the notification / permission laws that parents have regarding their children and medical procedures.

We know there are many organizations for children's rights but are there any for parent's rights?
Q. What do parents do when kids are disrespectful and mean and disrupt the family Other than send them off.. kids need to know they are members of the family not a protected specie. I know most kids are good kids but when a family becomes hostage to one members bad behaviors and threats of retaliation there should be should be a parent can do.

A. Since all the other answers s*ck let me say yes there are organization for parents rights just do a Google search. But probably the most valuable resource for parents with children like that is the same system that protects children. CPS and the juvenile justice system are not just there to protect children from harm from others but also to protect them from themselves and to protect others from out-of-control children. The simple truth is the laws are overwhelmingly on the side of the parent. If you live anywhere in the US you have the right to discipline your child including using corporal punishment as long as you are not abusive. If your child physically acts out does harm to your property/possessions or threatening violence call the… [cont.]
