basic european travel advice?
Q. I have some questions about my trip. Some basic information: I will be traveling with my boyfriend. Our dates are flexible but we would prefer to travel near the end of summer. We don't have a set budget right now because we're trying to gauge how much money we will need for this trip. Any type of budgeting/financial advice would be very welcomed and helpful. First and foremost, does this trip seem realistic? Have I given enough days to each city? Are there any changes you would make to this trip based on past experience? Are there any specific things we should do or places we should see in each of our cities? Transportation: Would you suggest getting a eurail pass? If so, which youth pass would you recommend? I was thinking of either… [cont.]

A. As you have not given details about your plans as they stand now, I can only give you general information. If you travel in July or August you will need to make reservations, but even then you can do that by phone the night before you arrive in a town if you are flexible, September and later in the year you will still want to phone in if you arrive late in the day, but if you arrive early there is no need for that. Costs: Western Europe, hostels, doing your own cooking, spending little or nothing on transport and drinking, about 50 per person per day. If two share a cheap hotel room and are careful in eating out, 60 to 75. I budget 100 for myself nowadays, and if you can, you should do too, it is so much more fun if you do have… [cont.]

A. None of the schools in the US are cheap. However the very best such as Harvard have need based aid. This means if you don't earn much (usually under 60K) then they charge you zilch. However to get into such schools you need ot be a near perfect student. Thanks Bill

Question for a youth girl's workshop?
Q. Hi all, I'm leading a small group workshop for a jr. high girls' church youth group event. My topic is on self image and I'm working on gathering information and advice on this. From a Christian perspective, what advice would you have for teen girls and their body image? Thanks! To the first person who answered: you call yourself an "atheist spammer" yet you refer to lucifer in your answer, and pledging your life to him... you realize by stating such a thing as that, you're not truly atheist--you've placed something above yourself? And I'd appreciate it if more people thumbs-down that response. Thanks!

Q. Can anybody think of a name for the new Rhondda youth website. It's for teenagers it will have event calenders and information about venues in the Rhondda, videos, pictures, advice and articles about issues and news. Not with Rhondda and youth in the title, something short and catchy! not cheesy!

A. Surely you want something that people will bring to mind easily? What about LiveRhondda.com or .co.uk? That way, it keeps the locale there so people will know whether it's pertinent to them.

Have I evolved more than my parents (Elders)?
Q. My parents seem very close minded and simple. They grew up watching corn grow and taking weekly rides into town on their families Jalopy. I grew up around limitless knowledge (internet) limitless entertainment (T.V.) and had alot more life experiences with traveling and networking etc. Yes, they experienced it later in life, but does the fact that I am exposed to alot more in my early childhood then they were make me better off? Just wondering as they are very close minded, stubborn, stuck in their ways, religously bound etc. Since birth I have been on the information highway and exposed to cultures they never knew existed. I think I am a more advanced human. They should be coming to the youth for advice. Right? I am talking about being… [cont.]

A. Nah. They have many years of experience. You just disqualify their experience by describing it as old and boring. They should listen to you and they should consider what you say, but they don't need to come to you for advice. Well, except for cases like: "Could you help me program this *** new telephone." And yes, parents can be stubborn. That's ok. Be gentle with them. Make sure you live your life like you think you should. Don't let them hold you down. And always be gentle with them.

I need advice from someone who is good with fashion?
Q. Okay, so I'm in YIG (Youth In Government) at my high school. And we are having a field trip to the state house in early December. We are supposed to dress nicely. Like suit-ish for guys. And I have never really needed to go shopping for these kinds of clothes. So I don't really know what to get. So far: I'm getting four pairs of pants (khaki/white and maybe a black pair), four shirts, four ties, a blazer, shoes, belt and socks. Would a black blazer go with khaki/white pants? I had to go to children's sizes because I'm too thin. hahaha What color shirts should I get? And what color shoes? A. My daughter is going to Cornell next year to study vet med. so I know about this. I don't know all the vet schools, but the ones I do know are University of Florida, Cornell, Auburn, LSU, and others. She is getting her 2 year degree at our local community college. She had to take mathematics up to calculus 3, chem 1, chem 2, organic chemistry 1 and 2, and physics 1 and 2. Besides all that science and math you have to take the regular courses like history, English etc. Getting into Vet school is very competitive no matter where you go. You will first need to get a 4 year degree in Biology. This is where the GPA is critical. You will need to have around a 3.5 GPA to get into Vet school and you also need to have a lot of volunteer hours… [cont.]

A. i have several friends who tried to go to vet school. The thing that seemed to matter most was that some applicants had worked for a vet, even volunteering, for years. so your record looks good, but they want to know that you KNOW you will do this, that you can handle the hard parts, and they know that by seeing that you have worked with a vet, and reading the recommendation from that vet.

Personalized College Advice?
Q. This question is open to alumni, current students, prospective students (who know more about specific colleges than I do). If you could give me any suggestions based on the following criteria, I would greatly appreciate it. 1. I live in Oregon (I would like to go to a relatively close school; i.e. WA, CA) 2. I would like to go to a liberal arts college or small university. 3. I would like to major in Physical Therapy, Communications or Journalism. I'm a skilled writer and love sports, so my ideal job would be a sports editor or columnist. 4. I play water polo, and would like to continue at either the intercollegiate, or at least the club level. 5. I plan to have about a 3.5 GPA, and an SAT score around 1840 (600 CR, 600 M, 640 W). 6. I am currently working at a casino as a card dealer and is miserable with my lack of achievement in life. The biggest problem I want to fix is my mentality and attitude in life. Even since I was young I was lazy and unmotivated. When I work I do not put in 100%. I have that subconscious concept of ooh if I did not try my best and fail then technically I did not fail. It is just because I did not try hard enough not that I am dumb mentality. A. You already have some insight into your situation: into why you do (or don't do) what you do (or don't do). The problem is that your insight is mixed with harmful stories that you are telling yourself. Stories such as "The Woeful Tale of My Wasted Youth." At 19, you're scarcely embarked on your youth. Sure you can waste it--in fact, you can waste it by thinking about how much you've wasted it--but you haven't wasted it yet. Here's a suggestion: go to a couple of open meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. Don't go in the suburbs; find some meetings in the grittier parts of a nearby city. There you will see people of 40, 50, 60 and older who've squandered their health and their families and their careers and, in… [cont.]
