A. I have no idea, but you're not too young, the medical field takes alot of years to get a degree, so start learning as soon as possible... you'll be happy you did something early in life.

Does America have maternal child and health nurses?
Q. In oz we have these nurses who we see right after the child is born and then when the child is 2 weeks then 4 weeks, then 4 months then 8 months and a few other times up untill the age of 3.5 years. Do u have those in america cause it seems as if you don't.
Asked by Jemjems_Mummy - Thu Sep 20 20:48:02 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Generally no, but some hospitals do have programs where they have a nurse come out if you had an early discharge from the hospital. Here you bring your child in to the doctor, rather than someone coming to you.

What do pharmacy technicians get paid? Thinking of a change of career from mental health nursing!?
Q. Feeling a bit burnt out by mental health nursing after having done it for over 15 years, fancy a change whilst remaining in the health care field. Don't want to work shifts, or weekends, I have 2 small children. Can't find any payscales for pharmacy technician and I have an interview tommorrow afternoon for one - please help!!!

A. I started in a retail pharmacy at $8.50/hour, and it took so much fighting to get raises that I was supposed to be given. After working for almost 2 1/2 years, I was finally making $10.00/hour. The pay will be depend on where you work-hospitals pay the best, but 99% of the time, you need to be nationally certified to work in a hospital. Private pharmacies may pay a decent amount, but your benefits might not be that good. Retail pharmacies vary so much depending on which one you choose, but you can get fairly decent benefits. If you don't want weekends, I would suggest a hospital. Going into any public setting, the last person hired gets the bad shifts! If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask!

A. Adult nursing is like working in hospitals, children's nursing in working with children, in hospitals or clinics, mental health is nursing in a psychiatric hospital or working in the community as a community mental health nurse and a midwife is working in the maternity ward or working in patients home etc. Look at www.nhscareers.co.uk and you can find info on all of the jobs and more.

What Form Does An Elderly Parent Need to Fill Out to Give an Adult Child Access to Health Information?
Q. Is there a form that an elderly parent can sign to give permission for an adult child to (1) talk to doctors and/or nurses about the parent's health records, etc. and (2) make decisions for the parent if the parent's health becomes very frail? I'm not sure if a "Health Care Power of Attorney" does this. Your help is appreciated.

A. A Durable Health Care Power of Attorney would be the place to start. Additional forms may be necessary, depending on your particular state laws. You will need at least three notarized originals - one for you, one for your parent, and one for your parent's doctor. If it were me, I would give a fourth notarized original to a trusted relative who doesn't live with either you or your parent. Before the time arrives that you would have to use it, make sure that you and your parent (going there together) give one of the originals to your parent's doctor, that your parent states their wishes (the ones in your question), and you confirm with the doctor that they now have all they need to grant those wishes in any circumstance. You need your… [cont.]

Why should parents' rights come before the child's health?
Q. I believe a doctor should be allowed to do whatever is best for the patient without asking the parents' permission to do anything. They can be informed, but damn it, the child's health and well being should come before parental rights. My aunt is a nurse, and she's seen kids in terrible pain and doctors can't do anything about the pain because the parents are pondering whether anesthesia is good or not. It's sick parental rights come before another person's health and well being.

Any mental health nurses or student mental health nurses out there?
Q. Just wondering if there are any mental health nurses or mental health student nurses who could give me some advice? I am currently studing children's nursing and coming to the end of my first year but I am thinking of changing to mental health nursing. I am intrigued by the issues faced by people with mh issues&I am interested in the theraputic aspect of nursing&talking to patients. The only reason I did not chose it in the first place was due to the stories I had heard about the violence that you can come up against etc. Any advice? Thanks!

A. I am a child health nurse working within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services; have done since finishing uni 18 months ago. Being worried about violence within mental health is a common anxiety but actually it is not as common as is made out. Depends on your client group. If you want to talk about this further then I'd be happy to give you some info... I was about the only one in my cohort interested in CAMHS so didn't have anyone to talk to about it! Email me if you want to know more.

How much milk should my 11 month be having?
Q. Hi, My boy was breastfed till 10 months, has spent the last month on formula. He eats three meals a day and is a great eater, at the moment he is having 3 bottles a day usually 180mls each time. I was wondering if this is too much milk or more milk than necessary. I have introduced cows milk as well. Just wondering when its time to wean the milk... the child health nurse said he should only have a bottle at night, so this has prompted my curiousity.
Asked by Feebee - Wed Jan 20 18:45:46 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. At 11 months my son had 3 bottles a day and each bottle was 4oz formula and 4oz of whole milk. Then each week until his 1st birthday I would add an ounce of milk and decrease an ounce of formula so by 1 year he was off of formula.

When did you put your child on cows milk?
Q. My daughter had her 12 month immunisations yesterday, And the child health nurse asked me what milk she was on. I said stage 3 formula, and she told me to start weaning her off and putting her on cows milk. When i got home i gave her cows milk, she drank the whole lot no problem, Should i have done this earlier? Also, she has only 2 fully through bottom teeth and the 2 top teeth are partially through. I told the nurse that she still has pureed/mashed food, because she doesn't seem to know how to chew. She told me to put her on our diet, She eats sausages/cucumber/cheese/ toast/sandwiches and stuff, But if she takes a bite she just spits it back out.. A. Most children go to cow's milk at 1 year of age so you're fine switching her now. As for food, it may be more the texture she doesn't like than the actual taste. I would feed her as much as you can and then follow up with baby food to ensure she's getting enough. It's not ideal, but it's okay to have a child on a bottle until about 18 months of age. I would start by taking it away either at night or during the day. The day time may be the easiest. Then once she's been doing fine with that, take it away the other part of the day or night. Good luck!

A. I'm gonna be going to University this year to do adult nursing. It all really depends on what your into and which you'll enjoy most. Personally, I'm going into adult nursing because I think it will open loads of doors because you can specialise in a specific area of adult nursing, if you like. Their always calling out for qualified nurses, abroad. That's why I was thinking of moving abroad after Uni. Australia in particular are always crying out for qualified nurses. Hope this helps x x

How do you train to be a Sexual Health Nurse in the UK?
Q. How do you train to be a Sexual Health Nurse in the UK? I am currently a Child branch nursing student however we have been encouraged to look at possible outlets for when we qualify as registered nurses. I have a passion to eradicate HIV/AIDS and have undertaken advocacy work at home in the UK and have practically served in Uganda with children affected by HIV/AIDS. I have a real heart for this, the poor, overseas work and justice and see a qualification in sexual health nursing once as a qualified RN to be helpful to then act out the passion I have, which is to serve overseas. But how do you train to be a nurse in this specific area?

A. Hello I ll make several suggestions that should be helpful. For general information on nursing, have a look at (select nursing within the A Z careers section). This provides much information including details of skills required, entry requirements, case studies, training and specific information on specialist areas of nursing. In addition, Nursing links will take you to the Nursing and Midwifery Council ( ), the governing body for nurse and midwives and the Royal College of Nurses ( ), the professional union of nurses. Contact with these sites should also provide information about nursing and qualification routes. Another useful site is - add nursing to the search box for links to nursing careers.
