Childcare, child care, or babycare is the act of caring for and supervising children usually from 0–8 years of age. (In the UK and Australia, day care is referred to as "childcare".) In the United States child care is increasingly referred to as early childhood education due to the understanding of the impact of early experiences of the developing child.

Child care is a broad topic covering a wide spectrum of contexts, activities, social and cultural conventions, and institutions.

How much do you pay for infant childcare?
Q. I have a six-month-old son, and I will soon be returning to part time work. I would need childcare for two or three 8-hour days each week. I am wondering how much I should expect to pay for part-time childcare. I'd be interested in hearing how much you pay for childcare, especially if you are in the U.S., California, or SF Bay Area. We are open to either a daycare center or a home daycare. Thanks!

A. I had a part-time nanny when I taught a course earlier this year (my son was also around 6 mos at the time). The waiting list for daycare was too long, so I found the nanny myself. The daycares that we looked at would have cost us anywhere between $200 and $250 a week. The nanny that we hired had a few years of experience and great references. We paid her $15 an hour, four days a week for four hours. I was appalled by how much it cost initially, but I found out quickly that it was the standard fee in my city (Seattle) for any nanny over 18. In fact we found several nannies who charged around $20 an hour Teenage babysitters (which I really didn't want) tend to charge around $10 an hour. I ended up only teaching one quarter at the… [cont.]

How do I get my 90 hour childcare certificate in Maryland?
Q. Hey, I need to get my 90 hr certification to work as a director at a day care in this state. I just moved here from PA and have been working in Childcare for 3.5 years, and wanted to know where to go to get it, or if maybe my experience would cover some of the courses, or even where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Steve

A. The Maryland Department of Education site has an early childhood education division. Another source of information would be any local community colleges that offer programs in early childhood education. If you need more information or have other questions don't forget to use the local college and public libraries as a resource. Many libraries now offer assistance through some type of chat service.
