How are countries selected to compete at the Olympics?
Q. For example, countries like Canada, Russia, China, Usa, are always at the Olympics. Why isnt Vietnam, or Africa, or Iran or those countries in the Olympics? Do they have to go through a process or long application to be accepted into the Olympics? Why dont those countries have a National Team to compete at International/world levels?
Asked by i luv hockey - Tue Jun 17 23:18:53 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments
A. How countries (territories, dependents and geographical areas) are selected to compete in the Olympics is by getting recognized by the International Olympic Committee. In 2004 Athens out of the 202 National Olympic Committees (NOCS) only Djibouti didn't participate. 2008 Beijing 3 new NOCs have been admitted Pacific Island nations of Tuvalu , Marshall Islands and Montenegro which declared its independence from the Serbian Republic. Next step which I believe your driving at is the athletes themselves that is all decided from how well the athletes do in their respective countries at world championships and other Olympic qualifying events as well as regional Olympic qualifying events. This determines the number of athletes or sport teams… [cont.]

How did European countries make sure that a newly discovered country was not claimed by another?

A. At first, it was mostly a matter of finders-keepers. Kingdoms who claimed an island or territory in their name basically got to keep it. This is how Spain got to control pretty much all of the Americas. As competition increased over territories, third parties were brought in to mediate between competing kingdoms. A prime example of this is the Treaty of Tordesillas signed in 1494 between Spain and Portugal. Drafted by Pope Alexander VI, it divided the as yet unexplored world between the two European powers of Spain and Portugal. Eventually competition got so fierce that it was reduced to war over colonies and territories. England fought fiercely with Spain for the lucrative territories in the Caribbean (Jamaica, the Bahamas,… [cont.]

What countries do you have to pay to visit in south america?
Q. I plan on flying from panama to ecaudor and then travelling by land to chile, argentina, peru, bolivia, and brazil. What countries charge you for a visa to visit the country?
Asked by darkknight - Fri Jun 13 23:36:32 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you are an American citizen, you need a visa to enter Brazil. You must pay a processing fee of US$130.00 in reciprocity for an identical fee paid by Brazilian citizens who apply for a tourist visa to the U.S.. You will also need a Yellow Fever International Immunization certificate. It recommends a Yellow Fever vaccination at least 10 days prior to arrival to the following regions: all the states of the Northern Midwestern regions and Maranhao and Minas Gerais, the regions southwest of Piaui, west of Bahia, west of Parana, west of Santa Catarina, northwest of Rio Grande do Sul and northwest of Sao Paulo. (Brazilian Consulate in NYC) Good Trip!

Why do some countries like America use almost all automatic transmissions while others use manual?
Q. In America and Canada, (And where else?) 90% of cars are automatic, while in almost all other countries it is the opposite. Is that because a bulk of American roads are crowded highways or are more relaxed? Or is more agressive driving okay in other countries? Thanks.

Q. With many countries having access to their own nuclear weapons/warheads; what keeps them from using them on other countries? If one country was to use a nuclear missle on another country, they would be out of harms way from any recoil that bomb should make. So why don't countries use them if they feel so threatened?

A. As one person already points out, MAD. MAD stands for Mutually Assured Destruction. Obviously this doesn't apply to all situations. What keeps one country from using its nukes against a country that doesn't have them? Two reasons, the country that doesn't have them may have allies that do, and any country that were to use them pre-emptively would be considered an outcast by most other nations.

Provide two reasons why population growth (family size) is likely to be greater in these poorer, developing countries than in wealthier developed countries. Well for the 1st reason i put Poorer societies tend to place a higher economical value on children. In some countries, you are considered wealthy by how many children you have. A. If it is an agricultural society, then more children mean more workers, which translates to more money. Whereas in industrial countries, more children means less money. More children can mean more support for parents in their old age. In tribal communities, more children can mean more political power, as the children grow to adulthood.

What Problems Do Countries Face Due to Legal Immigration?
Q. Illegal immigration isn't the only problem. Since 1970, the number of legal immigrants has doubled as skilled workers flee developing countries in hopes of living better lives. However many problems arise for both the countries of origin and the countries of destination including exploitation for cheap labor, dependency on remittances, a decrease in the supply of labor to developing countries, and many others. What do you think about this issue? Are there any other problems you think both developing and developed countries face with international migration?

A. Well, the way we do it does cause some problems. A lot of the replies above are the usual trite liberal BS and don't really address your question in any constructive way. The primary trouble with our immigration policies is that in addition to the genuinely gifted immigrants, there are many times more immigrants which have few marketable skills. This tends to put them in the general labor pool. When the demand for cheap labor is high, this is a manageable problem, but when demand goes slack a very high percentage of these people end up on the welfare roles or in our jails. This tends to happen at a rate that is disproportionate to their actual numbers. Sorry if that offends some, but it is a fact and rather than being a judgment of… [cont.]

Where can I find a list of countries without mental health legislation?
Q. I need to find the aforementioned list. Wikipedia says 3/4 of countries have mental health legislation, but it doesn't state which countries fall in the 1/4 group. I have also found a site that lists percentages, but the areas are very generalised, so I would need a more specific list, one that I have so far been unable to find. I don't need an actual website for reference, in case someone knows these countries by heart. Thanks in advance.

A. I don't know the list off the top of my head, but if you contact the World Health Organization they may be able to help you with this and other questions related to the issue of mental health legislation.
