entertainment (plural entertainments)

  1. An activity designed to give pleasure or relaxation to an audience, no matter whether the audience participates passively as in watching opera or a movie, or actively as in games.
    • 1957, William O. Douglas, Roth v. United States:
The delinquents are generally the adventurous type, who have little use for reading and other non-active entertainment.
  2. a show put on for the enjoyment or amusement of others
  3. (obsolete) maintenance or support
    • 1854?, Charles Dickens, The Seven Poor Travellers:
"This," said the matronly presence, ushering me into a low room on the right, "is where the Travellers sit by the fire, and cook what bits of suppers they buy with their fourpences."

"O! Then they have no Entertainment?" said I. For the inscription over the outer door was still running in my head, and I was mentally repeating, in a kind of tune, "Lodging, entertainment, and fourpence each."

  4. Admission into service; service.
    • 1601-1608, William Shakespeare, All's Well That Ends Well:

The entertainment of the general upon his first arrival was but six shillings and eight pence.

What is a good plant to put on top of an entertainment center?
Q. I have a rather large entertainment center. It has the 2 sides and then the TV stand in the middle. The top looks rather bare and I was thinking of putting a plant of some sort on the top. It can't be too heavy as I don't want it falling through! And would need to be easy to maintain. Would prefer something that would grow the length of the top of the entertainment center. I thought of ivy, but I had some and it died rather quickly. I did also have a philadendron on the top but it didn't fare to well either. It's still alive but prefers more light than it was getting. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Q. The unit is from Ikea, antique stained wood, 3 shelves, glass doors on the front and a 3-4" hole in the back for the wires. There is a VCR, DVD player, two TiVo's, and a Sony receiver/amp in the entertainment center.

A. drill 2 holes and put a quite fan on wither hole - one to extract heat and another to draw cool air in. This will ensure proper air-flow in the cabinet and keep things peachy;)

Q. It is more vertical than horizontal. It has many smallish compartments and even drawers. The small T.V. only barely fits into the biggest space. Is this piece of furniture called a home entertainment center? It looks more like a dresser. What is another word for it?

A. You may have an armoire, which is a French term for this sort of closet cabinet, albeit yours is not designed for clothing but for electronics. Not sure if you're needing to find a special cabinet, if you are in NY you can order a custom cabinet from here with your own dimensions and shelving/doors too. My housemate got some great cabinets in blue (!) but it looks great. They have many colors to choose from.
