How are social issues different from economic issues?
Q. I have to answer this for class. However, I'm not sure what the right answer is. What I've come up with so far is that economic issues such as men and women receiving equal pay, are affected by social issues, such as society's view that a woman's work is less important. Any ideas?

A. There are a lot of social issues which have no relation to economics at all, both at national levels of society, and at family levels. Social issues are more of the abstract type (which you can't show physically) but most of the economic issues are of the concrete type (which you can show physically). For example relegious fundamentalism. Religious fundamentalists don't quote any economic concerns. Their only point is the kind of belief in God. Simlarly at the level of a family, there could be a social issue due to economics involved, like living standards, who should work, etc. But sexual issues are not related to economics in the family. Similarly bringing up children with cultural values.

A. Ohhh I love these experiments. My favorite ethical problem comes from a good story about the Stanford Prison Experiment. The only reason he ended the study early (it was supposed to run for 2 weeks) is because his girlfriend saw some videos of what was going on and threatened to leave him if he didn't end it immediately. It's a good question. How soon after you know that something is harmful to your participants do you need to end the study? How much harm is acceptable, if you think that the harm will be temporary? Would it have been ethical to keep the subjects for another week, and run the risk that things would have gotten really bad, since they could have intervened if anyone's safety was at risk? What issues present a real problem to elementary school children?

Asked by anonymous - Sat Nov 22 11:49:15 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Bullying and changing. I remember when I was in elementry school (I had just moved to a new school/house, and my parents were getting a divorce) the girls used to tease me because I was fat. Thats when I developed my first eating disorder. People thought I was weird. Changes for puberty start to happen close to 4-5th grade, which can be akward and confusing. For the younger kids, its mainly bullying and finding friends.

A. Depends on why you're selling. Is it due to divorce and you have to split the assets? is it because competition by larger competitors has squeezed you out? Is it because you've spent 30 years (or more) painstakingly building up a successful business only to be told by your children that they have absolutely no interest in taking it over and can't wait for you to sell it? These circumstances shouldn't be called seller's remorse any more than the bank foreclosing on the home you lived in for 20 years should be called seller's remorse. Anything a person does year after year is a habit and habits can be hard to break. Here's a few: edit - I don't know if you're serious or not, but I don't think feminists are the ones to be attacked for ignoring racism...look around at all of these posts...these people are anti-feminist and they took your question as an opportunity to degrade black and hispanic women. I'm a feminist and I'm VERY sensitive to racism. A feminist is more likely to care about racism than an average person because they're aware of societal inequalities.

What are the issues with copper plumbing in a home built in 1988?
Q. I have a friend who has a home that has copper plumbing. The residence was built in 1988, and she was told by a neighbor that copper plumbing is bad and has to be removed/replaced in order to keep the value of the home for resale. This doesn't seem to make sense and the home does not have any plumbing issues to date. The neighbor cautioned that copper plumbing can burst. Is there any ring of truth to this or is the neighbor thinking of something else. A home built in 1988 doesn't seem that old to me. Please help. All answers are welcome. Thanks. Additional details. Here is the suspected issue: Different metals or types of pipe: copper and galvanized iron, were directly connected in the potable water supply system From this point of view, [cont.]
Asked by Avery G - Tue Jan 2 13:29:21 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If the copper pipe is stressed, it will create a leak, but only if stressed. By this I mean thin wall, kinks, etc. I have never heard of copper pipes devaluing a home. If anything, copper will add value compared to CPVC or galvanized. If there are no issues with leakage or significant corrosion, leave it.

Domestic health care, domestic economy and failing banks, failing housing market and the loss of jobs. Taxes must not go up! People are already paying to much for way less. We need LESS government involvement in people's lives. Last but not least, the illegal immigration issue and giving benefits to people that do not deserve them.
