Melbourne (pronounced /ˈmɛlbɚn/, locally also [ˈmælbən, -bn̩]) is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and also the second most populous city in Australia. The Melbourne City Centre (also known as the "Central Business District" or "CBD") is the anchor of the greater geographical area and the Census statistical division — of which "Melbourne" is the common name. As of late 2009, it had an approximate population of 4 million. A resident of Melbourne is known as a "Melburnian".

The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned at the estuary of the Yarra River (at the northern-most point of the bay). The metropolitan area then extends south from the city centre, along the eastern and western shorelines of Port Phillip, and expands into the hinterland. The city centre is situated in the municipality known as the City of Melbourne, and the metropolitan area consists of a further 30 municipalities.

It was founded in 1835 (47 years after the European settlement of Australia) by settlers from Van Diemen's Land. The early settlement was originally known as "Bearbrass". It was renamed "Melbourne" in 1837, in honour of William Lamb — the 2nd Viscount Melbourne. Melbourne was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847. In 1851, it became the capital city of the newly created colony of Victoria. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it then served as the interim seat of government of the newly created nation of Australia until 1927.

Today, it is a centre for the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, sport and tourism. It is the birthplace of cultural institutions such as Australian film (as well as the feature film), Australian television, Australian rules football, the Australian impressionist art movement (known as the Heidelberg School) and Australian dance styles (including the Melbourne Shuffle and New Vogue). In recent years, it has also become a hub of the Australian music industry. For this, it is known as the "cultural capital of Australia".

Melbourne is classified as a Beta World City+ by Loughborough University's GaWC Research Network, and as a City of Literature by UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. It has been ranked as one of the top three World's Most Livable Cities by the Economist Group's Intelligence Unit (since 2002), top 10 Global University Cities by RMIT's Global University Cities Index (since 2006) and top 20 Global Innovation Cities by the 2thinknow® Global Innovation Agency (since 2007). The metropolis is also home to the world's largest tram network. The main airport serving Melbourne is Melbourne Airport.

How has melbourne urban landscape changed over space and time?
Q. do you also think Melbourne should continue to grow outwards?
Asked by Laura - Thu May 29 08:00:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes. and No. Mammoth cities are hideous to live in if you are stuck on the outskirts because that's all you can afford - it costs a small fortune and takes forever to get to work. Can't understand why people don't chose Geelong or Ballarat instead. Much nicer places in my opinion. The same applies to Sydney. It's outgrown itself. Beyond the bridge and opera house, it's bloody hell on earth to get around.

How long would it take for relocating with family from Melbourne to Sydney?
Q. I will be going from Melbourne to Sydney for a job interview. At the interview, if they ask me how long before I join them, what would be a good answer which wouldnt put the interviewer off? Is 1 month good or is that a long time for relocation? Any experienced people out there? Would Companies usually bear the relocation costs?

A. So many things to consider Wheres the company located ... where do u want to live... remember sydney property prices much higher than melbournes ... How old are your family Have to consider schools When to move the kids Relocation costs will depend upon position ... Are you that desirable for the role ... whos making the move decision As for time ... They may want you to start relatively quickly eg a month .. which may mean you finding a serviced apartment... before relocating the family Im sure the employer will understand your situation to some extent If your serious start looking at property now Some web sites to get you started
