In biology, offspring is the product of reproduction, a new organism produced by one or more parents.

Collective offspring may be known as a brood or progeny in a more general way. This can refer to a set of simultaneous offspring, such as the chicks hatched from one clutch of eggs, or to all the offspring, as with the honeybee.

Human offspring (descendants) are referred to as children (without reference to age, thus one can refer to a parent's "minor children" or "adult children"); male children are sons and female children are daughters. See kinship and descent.

The word "fetus" is derived from the Latin word for "offspring." In humans, the fetal stage begins eight weeks after conception, when all of the major organs have been formed.

How closely related (genetically) are the offspring of a pair identical male and female twins?
Q. A pair of identical male twins marry a pair of identical female twins, and both marriages produce offspring. How closely related genetically are the 1st cousins? Would the 1st cousins be genetic siblings even though they have different parents?

Why is it important to have a large number of offspring in a genetics lab?
Q. I'm doing a lab in my bio class about fruit flies. Why is it important to have lots of offspring to record data on?

A. Otherwise, random variation can obscure your results. For example, if you had 2 red eyed flies and 2 white-eyed flies, you would not really know whether the true ratio was 3:1 or 1:1, but if you had 202 vs. 198, it would be obvious.
