An academician friend told me that there are five organizations that sprang up in the late 18th. and early 19th. centuries that make spurious claims of decent from the Templars. I can only remember the Masons and one other that he mentioned (he said that only their capacity for drinking and wenching was a Templar tradition). I've got in contact with a couple NGO's that are there right now for volunteering...but it's almost impossible to volunteer there if you aren't a professional (doctor, nurse, etc...) b/c a lot of the activities that are needed there usually go to locals b/c they have heavy unemployment...so they pay a lot of people that live in certain area's of Darfur to do a lot of the work that you are looking to volunteer for.
