Is there evidence that pregnancy causes the mother to develop an autoimmune disease?
Q. My grandmother and a cousin both developed severe rheumatic autoimmune diseases after pregnancy, when being previously fine before pregnancy. I have not been able to find any additional evidence of pregnancy causing an autoimmune disease to develop, but am wondering if anyone knows of a link between the two, either clinical or anecdotal. I realize that pregnancy has effects on women who already have autoimmune diseases, but am trying to weigh the risks of developing an illness from being pregnant. Any additional information would be very helpful. Thank you!

A. What happens is that the disease is not active, but there, and flares after the delivery. Autoimmune diseases are "triggered" and often dormant. I have RA. It was triggered by strep throat at age 27. I probably got it at about age 23, when it was assumed I had carpal tunnels from being a pastry chef. Turns out, after having the electrical test for carpal tunnels, I didn't have carpal tunnels. I was experiencing the beginning of my RA those years back, without the full-blown symptoms I had once the strep throat came along. Now I have the full-blown RA. Keep in mind that giving birth is a traumatic event to your body and trauma can cause an autoimmune disease. People have been triggered into RA by car accidents, believe it or not.

How did your second pregnancy compare to your first pregnancy?
Q. Just curious:) My first pregnancy wasn't too bad. My biggest complaint is that I was tired all day, every day. I gained a total of 35 lbs. I didn't have any complications.. I had the epidural & I had a vaginal delivery. I am now 6 months pregnant.. I look like I did when I was 8 months pregnant w/ my son.. I am gaining weight much quicker. I am waddling like a duck already. I have cramps, aches & back pains. I have 3 months to go.. hopefully the delivery goes smoothly.

A. I totally hear you!!! I am 34 weeks with a girl and my son is 23 months old. This second pregnancy was so much more difficult. I was sick more at the beginning, I had to go to the emergency room twice with bleeding in my first trimester... I can't sleep, I developed restless leg syndrome, my back is killing me (I think I will be crippled after this), and yes, I am huge - definetally bigger than I was with my first one (I can't fit in any of my old pregnancy clothes by now)... I am also waddling like a duck and I am terrified of the labor...looking at this pregnancy - what else is going to happen??? (scream...ripping my hair out...lol)

How far into her pregnancy will a pregnant Guinea pig's hip bones start to separate?
Q. When her hips separate, how many weeks/days are left of her pregnancy? We got a pregnant piggie from a store and I can't find much about it online. She's about five months old. I'm not talking about when the bones are as wide as they'll get. How far into the pregnancy will they just begin to separate?
Asked by Equine Canine Rodent Lover - Sat Nov 1 21:23:17 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sows can vary but if you have been checking her bones regularly you may just be able to detect them starting to part 7-8 days before birth. The bones will stay wide open for the last 24-48 hours of pregnancy. If the sow has had a previous litter it can all happen fairly quickly. If it is a first time mum the bones seem to have been opening forever and she will keep you waiting!

A. I just turned 38 and have been remarried for 5 years now. I have two children from my first marriage, both were born when I was in my mid-20's. I know the risks for certain birth defects are increased now that I'm older, but my husband and I plan to start TTC later this year. We are both in good health but have decided that if we are not successful within 6 months-one year, we will stop. I really don't want to get pregnant at 40! My OB told us that twins are more common in older mothers and they run in my my hubby's family too. Best of luck to you and **baby dust**!

Does a normal 38 weeks pregnancy start from conception or implantation?
Q. Sperm can apparently live up to 7 days inside a woman. Does a 38 week pregnancy occur anytime from these 7 days or does a 38 week pregnancy start from implantation which happens something like 12 days after conception?
Asked by stowey - Wed Jul 15 11:50:01 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. An average pregnancy is considered to be 40 weeks counted from the first day of the last menstrual period. It is more common to count from the first day of the last menstrual period because date of conception is not easily determined. Even using an ovulation predictor kit or monitoring basal body temperature and cervical mucous, you can't know for sure when ovulation occurred. At best you will come up with a likely time frame to ovulate. In addition to the unknown factor of when the egg is released from the ovary, you also have the variable of how long sperm live inside a woman. Sperm do have potential to live inside a woman for several days, possibly as long as 6-7 days if conditions are optimal. After the egg has released from the ovary… [cont.]

A. Braxton Hicks contractions can start as early as 16 weeks for most women. If you get more than 4 strong ones in one hour call L & D and speak with a nurse.

Q. I have had endometriosis for the last few years and was on birth control to help to keep it from speading. How soon into pregnancy might you start having food cravings?
Q. How soon into pregnancy might you start having food cravings? I have NEVER liked scrambled eggs, until a few weeks ago. I could be pregnant. No more than a month pregnant though. A. It varies. And food cravings aren't necessarily because you want the food, but because of what the food can give you. Some cravings can start right away, others later in pregnancy. It just depends. And cravings are usually for a mineral or vitamikn your body is lacking. It will naturally crave a food that can give it what it needs in a decent dose. For instance, milk cravings might be a signal your body needs calcium or vitamins A and/or D. Eggs you may need more protien. If you crave anything wierd (read- NOT food) call a dr. That craving, pregnant or not, shouldn't be ignored. And it is a signal your body needs something. Some women can crave cigarette ashes, laudry soap, and dirt- those are signals to pay attention to. Q. How soon into pregnancy might you start having food cravings? I have NEVER liked scrambled eggs, until a few weeks ago. I could be pregnant. No more than a month pregnant though. The only signs I have really noticed is egg cravings and maybe implantation bleeding. If I am pregnant, why might I be craving scrambled eggs?

A. How early can you start having pregnancy symptoms?
Q. How soon after conceiving can you start to have pregnancy symptoms? My period for October started on the 8th and ended on the 12th. My husband and I are trying to have a child. Two days ago I started getting sick to my stomach, feeling dizzy, little headaches, TIRED (I can barely keep my eyes open), one minute I'm hungry and then the next minute I won't have the desire to eat and when I do eat my food just taste a little different to me. Are these early signs of pregnancy?

A. The first symptom is a missed period. Sometimes we want to be pregnant so bad that our bodies trick us into feeling things that you may have not noticed before but have been there all along. Just relax and try not to think about it. Then take an HPT when you expect your period t start.
